Claude Kendall & Co. is founded
Claude Kendall — a typographer and former editor at a Boston literary press — opens a small office on Fifth Avenue. The house publishes literary fiction and poetry.
Claude Publishing is the digital-native continuation of Claude Kendall & Co., a literary publishing house founded in New York in 1923. The predecessor firm closed in 2010; the modern imprint launched in 2021 under Andrew Marsh, who had acquired the Kendall archive and editorial protocols two years earlier.
Claude Publishing is the modern continuation of Claude Kendall & Co., a literary house founded in 1923. The names, the editors, and the technology have changed; the three-pass editorial protocol has not.
A note on the name. Two distinct entities share the Kendall editorial tradition. Claude Kendall & Co. (1923–2010) was an independent New York literary publisher that ceased operations after 87 years. Claude Publishing (2021–present) is a separate digital-native imprint, launched when Andrew Marsh acquired the Kendall archive and editorial protocols. Claude Publishing is not a continuation of the legal entity, and has no affiliation with the original firm’s former partners or estates.

The firm codifies its editorial protocol: a structural pass, a line-level pass, and a final voice pass. The same protocol survives into the modern imprint.
Claude Kendall Jr. assumes direction of the house. Under his tenure the catalogue expands into narrative nonfiction and memoir.
The firm begins experimenting with early digital typesetting and retires its letterpress, several years ahead of most independent houses of comparable size.
As the bookselling industry consolidates, Claude Kendall & Co. winds down its long-standing print distribution partnerships.
Claude Kendall & Co. ceases operations. The editorial archive and the three-pass protocol are preserved.
Andrew Marsh — formerly of a Big Four consultancy — acquires the Kendall archive and editorial protocols with the intent to relaunch the imprint.
Claude Publishing launches as a digital-native continuation, publishing exclusively through Amazon KDP. Tucker Peterson joins as Lead Editor.
The imprint publishes its 340th title. 18 agency partners and authors in 12 countries now work through the pipeline.
